The Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce joined Redstone Federal Credit Union® in celebrating its student-run branch inside Blackman High School.
Blackman, one of the largest high schools in Tennessee, is the first high school branch of Redstone in Tennessee. It is operated by students with a teacher-advisor.
A ribbon cut recently took place to celebrate the company. The branch opened in 2020 when the pandemic forced many students into distance learning.
Student cashiers accept deposits, cash checks, handle cash withdrawals, and perform money transfers.
While gaining actual work experience, students also increase their financial literacy and become eligible for a Redstone University Scholarship. There are 10 student scrutineers.
Another benefit of Blackman’s relationship with Redstone is the specially designed debit card that generates money for the school every time it is used. Redstone members can apply for the Blackman Blaze debit card at their branch.
“We are delighted to open our first student-run branch in County Rutherford and we are delighted to partner with the Blackman School family to help students understand banking, money management and how to do it. building a strong financial future, ”said Mike Panesi, vice president of Redstone. President, Tennessee Market.
Panesi credits the successful opening of the branch to Blackman’s principal, Dr Leisa Justus, and the Rutherford County Schools Authority.
“The mission of our Rutherford County schools is to ‘prepare the students of today for the opportunities of tomorrow’. This partnership with Redstone does just that, ”Justus said. “What a great way to integrate classroom learning with real-life experience.
