It’s Crucial to Create a Balanced Class Schedule • The Tulane Hullabaloo

(Will Embrée)

For some, college is arguably one of the best times in a young adult’s life. For others, however, college can lead people to struggling with mental health issues, especially those stemming from stress related to academic, financial, and/or career-related issues.

Creating balance is something that many students struggle with; difficulties arise when students feel pressure to manage school work as well as a host of other factors such as social obligations, work and career, mental health and physical health.

Junior Finance Major Teddy Reese said, “Taking a high number of credit hours kept me from participating in the amount of extracurricular activities outside of class. [that I would like].”

Although these stressors vary between individuals, many of these problems are unavoidable for students. Thus, it is important that students, especially those at Tulane University, learn how to create and manage a schedule that works for them. This can start with developing a course program tailored to your own needs and abilities.

by Tulane class registration for Fall 2022 began on April 6, and the majority of students have already started enrolling in classes. However, those enrollment dates may have eluded many students amid the chaos of spring break, midterms, and summer preparations.

As such, many students are likely still working on adjusting their schedules for the upcoming semester. This gives students who are not yet sure of the upcoming semester the opportunity to adapt their schedules to create as much balance as possible.

In order to maintain a well-balanced schedule each semester, it is important that students familiarize themselves with their diploma audits. Whether it’s a freshman or a sophomore senior, it’s essential to know what classes are required to earn your degree(s), as well as the number of credit hours needed to be on track for graduation.

Reflecting further on his past course schedules, Reese said, “I’ve taken four to five courses that give me credit for the undergraduate credit limit but don’t help me with my actual degree audit, so if Had I been able to take just another finance class in previous semesters, I wouldn’t have to take 22 credit hours the following semester. »

Familiarity with its audit will help students plan for upcoming semesters. This is essential because no one wants to end up having one semester filled with their most difficult major requirements while another semester is filled with random choices.

However, organizing a personalized and balanced lesson plan can be complicated, and interpreting audits can be confusing. Students shouldn’t be afraid to ask their academic advisors for help – that’s what they’re here for!

To advise is one of the most crucial and beneficial resources available to Tulane students. The school has a team of talented and knowledgeable advisors who are available to help students in a myriad of ways.

Students can make an appointment with their appointed advisors, who can then help them declare majors and minors, learn about pre-professional pathways and, of course, create a balanced course curriculum.

Meeting with counselors and creating their most ideal schedules will help students in many ways, because balanced schedules can help to reduce stress levels and lead to better academic results.
