About 39 million American families should benefit financially from the improvement child tax credit this year, and those who are eligible may see their first partial payment on July 15. The credit allows parents to receive $ 3,000 in total for each child aged 6 to 17 (or $ 3,600 for children under 6), with the option of receiving half of the credits through payments monthly anticipated this year. If you haven’t already, estimate your family total using CNET child tax credit calculator.

Before next month, two online portals to help roll out the child tax credit will be made available by the IRS. One of the portals will allow families to refuse monthly payments if they prefer to receive a lump sum in 2022. Another portal will be intended for those who do not normally file income tax returns. Parents can inform the tax authorities of any change in circumstances, such as the birth of a child or marriage.

We’ll continue to update this story as the IRS releases more information, but we can tell you what we know so far. We can also suggest some ways to use your child tax credit checks, give you details of how you could receive your payment and tell you how to claim thousands of dollars in return for child care expenses.

What will the online child tax credit portals be used for?

Right now, we know that the next IRS portals will be helpful for parents to make the necessary changes:

  • The main portal can be used to let families withdraw to receive monthly child tax credit payments – this is for those who would rather receive a large payment next year instead of receiving half of the credit as partial payments this year.
  • The other portal will be for families who generally do not file income tax returns. This will help ensure that their information is up to date, including if they have gained new dependents or have a change in reporting or income status. (This is important because income thresholds determine how much money parents can receive and whether they qualify.)

When can families access the two IRS portals?

The IRS has set an open deadline of July 1, although we don’t have an exact date yet – the portals could go live sooner than that. The IRS simultaneously processes tens of millions of tax returns, which can affect the timing while it organizes the child tax credit program.

How can parents decline monthly payments through IRS portals?

The main portal will allow you refuse to receive monthly child tax credit payments. What does it mean? This means that instead of receiving monthly payments of, say, $ 300 for your 4-year-old, you can wait to file your 2021 taxes in 2022 to receive the lump sum of $ 3,600.

You may also want to opt out because you expect your situation to change and you do not want to update your information in the portal.

How can households that do not declare taxes use the portals?

IRS to open second portal dedicated to people who generally do not file their income taxes. This child tax credit portal will allow this group to provide the IRS with their up-to-date information, including the number and ages of eligible dependent children.

The portal should allow non-tax filers to submit a simplified electronic form to the IRS for guarantee their eligibility. This group would include people who do not have a bank account, as well as the homeless population.

There is no limit to the number of children for which parents can receive the credit as long as they and their dependents are eligible.

What are the other useful things about child tax credit portals?

Taxpayer families will be able to make changes to any circumstances in their lives since the last tax return, such as a income change and child custody status. For example, if you started making less money this year, you’ll want to update the IRS on these changes so you can get the correct amount of child tax credit.

If you had or will have a new baby this yearIt is important to notify the IRS so that you can receive your payment up to $ 3,600 for that child. The same applies if you have adopted a child or if you have acquired a new dependent child since your last income tax return.

In addition, if you have obtained full custody of your child, you will be the parent who will receive the money for your child. Note that parents who have shared custody will not each receive a payment. This is important for survivors of domestic violence according to comments during an IRS surveillance hearing by Nina Olson, Executive Director of the Center for Taxpayer Rights. “This change of circumstances portal should allow them to enter their change of marital status and also where the children are.”
